The pathway

Placement first. Then six levels, mastered in order.

A short placement quiz finds the level where fractions genuinely starts for your child. From there, each level ends in a mastery quiz, passed before the next level opens.

1. Placement quiz

   Finds the starting level. No assumptions from age or school year.

2. Level 1

   Year 5 standard

   Equivalence, comparison and addition of fractions with the same denominator, built on visual models.

   • —Use visual models to understand equivalent fractions and simplify to lowest terms
   • —Compare and order fractions using number lines and benchmarks (½, ¼, 1)
   • —Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, including mixed numbers
   • —Solve fraction word problems

3. Level 2

   Year 6 standard

   Unlike denominators and fraction multiplication: the step from models to abstract methods.

   • —Use the highest common factor to simplify fractions
   • —Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers
   • —Multiply fractions by whole numbers and find a fraction of a quantity
   • —Compare, order and calculate with fractions (NESA MA3-RQF-01)
   • —Solve exam-style multi-step fraction problems with logical explanations

4. Level 3

   Year 7 standard

   All four operations with fractions, consolidated into confident, flexible use.

   • —Simplify, compare and order fractions
   • —Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions
   • —Operate with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios (NESA MA4-RAT-01)
   • —Solve fraction word problems and justify solution methods

5. Level 4

   Year 8 standard

   Complex fraction computation and the first crossover into algebra with fractional coefficients.

   • —Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions
   • —Simplify expressions with fractional coefficients
   • —Solve equations involving fractions
   • —Solve complex multi-step fraction problems

6. Level 5

   Year 9 standard

   Algebraic fractions: fraction skills applied to expressions with pronumerals.

   • —Simplify simple algebraic fractions by identifying common factors
   • —Solve linear equations involving fractions
   • —Simplify algebraic expressions involving fractions (NESA MA5-ALG-01)

7. Level 6

   Year 10 standard

   Fluent manipulation of algebraic fractions within factorising, substitution and equation solving.

   • —Simplify algebraic fractions, including after factorising
   • —Substitute values into expressions involving algebraic fractions
   • —Apply fraction skills within multi-step equations and quadratic work

All topics and levels are aligned to the NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus (NESA). Level 1 corresponds to the Year 5 standard and Level 6 to the Year 10 standard, spanning Stages 3 to 5 of the NSW curriculum.
